How Video Cutter works
Cut the boring bits out of your videos and export them in the right shape for YouTube, TikTok, Reels, Shorts or Instagram. You cut in your browser and the app does the heavy work; your original file is never changed.
Getting started
- Create an account on the login page ("Create one"). Pick the free trial or a plan.
- Add a video: drop it on the big box or click it to choose a file.
- Cut it: by hand with markers, or automatically with BrickCut.
- Export: pick the platforms you want and download the result.
Adding a video
Drop a video on the box on the Videos page, or click the box to choose one. Most formats work: MP4, MOV, MKV, WEBM, AVI and more.
- Big files are sent in pieces. If your connection drops, choose the same file again and it continues where it stopped.
- After uploading, the app makes thumbnails (and a playable copy if your browser can't play the file). This takes a moment for long videos.
- Your plan decides how many videos you can add, how big a file may be and how much storage you have. You see this above the upload box.
- Deleting a video doesn't give an upload back; the count is about how many videos you added.
Cutting by hand
Pick Cut by hand at the top right of the editor.
- Markers split the video into parts. Click Drop marker here (or press M) at the playhead, or type a time under "Add a cut by timestamp" (1:12, 01:12.5 or 72 all work).
- Keep or cut: click a part in the timeline (or press K) to switch it between kept (blue) and cut out (striped). "Cut out" with From/To removes a whole range at once.
- Move a marker by dragging it, or select it and use [ / ] to move it one frame. Double-click a marker to remove it.
- Type exact times: click a part in the Parts list to type its start and end.
- Preview kept parts only plays the video as it will be exported.
- Undo with the Undo button or Ctrl+Z. Everything saves by itself.
Precise cutting
Zoom into the timeline with the − / + buttons, the slider, + / −, or by pinching on a phone or tablet. When zoomed in, the strip shows the real frames at that spot, so you can cut on the exact frame. , and . step one frame back or forward.
BrickCut (LEGO)
For LEGO build videos: BrickCut listens for the click of a brick snapping on and keeps only those moments.
- Pick BrickCut (LEGO) at the top right of the editor.
- Choose a style: Speed build (about 0.1 s per snap, like a fast-forward) or Normal (1.5 s per snap, you see each brick placed).
- Click Find snaps. Listen to the found clicks by tapping them.
- Optional: mark 3–5 real snaps as examples ("Snap fingerprint") so only clicks that sound like them are kept, and teach it your background noise.
- Click Apply to timeline. The result is normal parts you can still adjust, then export.
Your BrickCut settings are saved to your account, on every device.
Effects between parts
In Cut by hand, under "Effects between parts", choose how kept parts flow into each other: a hard cut, crossfade, fade through black or white, wipes, slides, zoom and more. Give one join its own effect in the Parts list, and preview it with ▶. You can also fade in at the start and out at the end.
Mirror
The Mirror card flips the picture left ↔ right (handy for front-camera videos) and/or upside down. You see it right away and every export uses it.
Speed
The Speed card sets the speed of the whole clip, from 0.25× (slow motion) to 8× (fast). Give one part its own speed with the small speed button in the Parts list (for example a boring bit at 4×); pick Clip there to use the clip's speed again. The sound stays in sync and keeps its normal pitch. The preview plays at these speeds, and the Parts list and the Speed card show the final length.
Sound
Under the timeline you see the sound wave. Ctrl+click anywhere on it to open a small menu: add a Volume dot, Fade in, Fade out, Mute, Quieter or Louder right there (effects start 2 seconds long). You can also drag across it to pick an exact stretch. Drag the edges of a coloured block to change it; click it to play or remove it. Every kept part has orange dots at its start and end: drag them to fade that part in or out. Double-click the sound wave to place a volume dot, then drag it up/down (volume) and left/right (time); the sound moves smoothly from dot to dot. Click a dot to set its volume exactly or remove it. The Sound card has the volume of the whole clip, the effects, Even out the loudness, Remove background noise and Background music (it gets quieter by itself while someone talks).
Subtitles
- In the Subtitles card, pick the language (or let it detect it) and click Make subtitles. Speech recognition listens to the video and writes the lines. The very first time it also downloads the speech model, so that takes a few extra minutes.
- Check the lines: click a time to jump there and type in a line to fix a word. Remove lines with ×, or add one at the playhead with + Line here. They show on the video while you play it.
- Pick a Look (Clean, Box, or Big & bold), a Font (11 to choose from, like Anton for TikTok or Luckiest Guy for YouTube) and a Size.
- Want your own font? Click Aa next to the font (or "+ Add your own font…" in the list) and upload a .ttf or .otf file. Only you can use it. Click ☆ to make a font a favourite: favourites are at the top of the list.
- To put the subtitles somewhere else, drag them on the video. When the video is paused between lines, a sample shows so you can still drag it. Back to the usual place undoes it. In other shapes (for example 9:16) they go to the same spot, relative to the picture.
- In the Export window, choose Burn into the video (always visible) and/or Also save an .srt file (for YouTube or another editor).
The lines follow your cuts and speed changes: lines in parts you cut out are left out, and the rest move to the right moment.
Projects (several clips)
Under Your projects, click + New project. Add videos from Media; they go one after another on the video row. Upload music or sounds; they go on the sound rows. Select a block to Split, Delete, Mute, change Speed, Volume or Fades. Detach sound puts a clip's sound on its own row: then you can delete or Replace the video and the sound keeps playing over the new picture. On a phone the tools are big buttons at the bottom; choose the layout yourself in your account menu.
Your own layout
Move any card in the editor (Subtitles, Parts, Effects, Mirror, Speed and the cutting tool) by dragging it by the ⠿ at its top left: up or down, or between the right panel and the row under the timeline. Your layout is saved to your account. Reset layout under the right panel puts everything back.
Exporting
- Click Export → at the top right.
- Pick one or more platforms: original size, YouTube 16:9, TikTok / Reels / Shorts 9:16, Instagram feed 4:5 or square 1:1.
- For a different shape, choose what to keep: the left/top, middle, right/bottom, or Fit (the whole picture on a blurred background).
- Choose One video (parts joined) or Each part as its own clip.
- Click export. When it's ready, download the files, or all of them at once with Download ZIP.
Earlier exports stay listed in the Export window, so you can download them again later.
Plans, trial & upgrading
- The free trial lets you try everything once: 1 video and 1 export with each tool.
- Paid plans are bought through Gumroad. After paying you get a license key on your receipt; paste it in the app.
- To upgrade or change plan: click your name (top right) → Upgrade or change plan. The upgrade window also opens by itself when you try something your plan doesn't include.
- Monthly and yearly plans renew through Gumroad. If a plan ends, your videos stay; you can renew with a new key.
Your account
Click your name at the top right to change your email address, username or password, upgrade your plan, or log out. Add an email address so you can get a new password if you forget it ("Forgot password?" on the login page).
